Cromwell - British Bulldog painting

Friday, October 10th, 2008

There is nothing quite like the unmistakable face of a British Bulldog!

Bulldogs are a dog breed developed originally from Mastiffs that were also used in the cruel sports of bull and badger “baiting” which were popular in England for hundreds of years until they were finally made illegal in 1850.   Today’s Bulldogs are more heavily built and far less athletic than their ancestors, and they are generally placid, gentle and very affectionate companions who love children.

Bulldogs like Cromwell make devoted family pets, and although they can’t be exercised excessively, they can be quite lively and rambunctious and many of them have a good sense of humor!

If you are a Bulldog lover, this is your opportunity to own an original oil painting featuring this gorgeous breed!

‘Helping Paws’ #2 - German Shepherd

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

My second entry for the Canine Art Guild’s ‘Helping Paws’ online Exhibition is my charcoal painting of “Noble” the German Shepherd Dog.  “Noble” seemed like a very appropriate choice to exhibit in an exhibition titled “Helping Paws” considering the number of GSD’s around the world that lend their paws to help people in need in many different situations including the Police force, military, search and rescue and service and therapy dogs that aid people with disabilities and illness.

Royalty Greyhound dog painting

"Royalty" original Greyhound dog painting by Michelle Wrighton

This is a small acrylic painting of Gilley, a rescue Greyhound dog from the UK. Greyhounds have the most beautiful, big, liquid, expressive eyes that are an absolute joy to paint. As a breed, Greyhounds have such a regal bearing that the deep purple background seemed appropriate for Gilley’s painting

These smaller paintings are very enjoyable to do, although this one is still quite detailed, I am really trying to loosen up and capture the essence of the animal without being totally pre-occupied with capturing every last detail!

The painting is continued on all four edges and is ready to hang.  “Royalty” is available on merchandise and prints, but this is the first time this original painting from my personal collection has been offered for sale.

Grey Ghost: Weimaraner art

“Grey Ghost”

11″ x 14″

Artists Colour Pencil on Drafting film

by

Michelle Wrighton

"Grey Ghost" Weimaraner portrait by Michelle Wrighton

This colour pencil painting received an Honourable Mention at the 2007 Kelmscott Show, which was quite an honour considering that it was the only non-human artwork in its category!

LOL, I tend to walk to the beat of my own drum and don’t always follow tradition (self taught artist and all that;) I consider much of the art that I produce as ‘portraits’, the fact that they are non-human is not really relevant in my humble opinion, so I went ahead and entered this one in the ‘Portraits’ category (the rules didn’t stipulate which species the portraits had to be of, so I thought it was a reasonable option).  LOL the judge either agreed with me, or was also a dog lover as well.  I did win a couple of first prizes in other categories with other animal art I had entered, but the ‘Highly Commended - Portraits’ award for this one was pretty sweet;)

All About my Dog Paintings Series

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Hi!  My name is Michelle Wrighton, I am an award winning Western Australian artist specializing in Canine Fine Art.  I have undertaken pet portrait commissions for a number of years, and my online portfolio of commissioned pet portraits and wildlife artwork and photography can be viewed at http://michellewrighton.com.

I am a fairly versatile artist and prefer to work in a number of mediums including graphite, charcoal, artist colour pencils, soft pastels, acrylic and oils.  I love animals, and enjoy portraying their personality and character in my art - but dogs are my favourite subjects to portray, their uniqueness, expressiveness and personality truly make them man (and woman’s) best friend!  I have three dog’s of my own and would have more if I could:)

My commissioned artwork is created in a highly detailed and very realistic (almost photographic) style, and to achieve this level of detail, each piece of my artwork takes from 10 to 60+ hours to complete, depending on the size, medium and detail involved.

The Dog Paintings blog is a project that I have planned for several years to allow me to further my development as an artist by creating a series of smaller format and less time intensive dog paintings to experiment and explore artistic styles other than photo-realism and have a little bit of fun!

Yes, us artists can be a bit weird;)  Many of us take a ‘relaxing break’ from our regular (paid) art by creating more art in our free time just for ‘fun’.  I love dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds and cross-breeds, so my subject matter will remain the same, I’ll just be working more expressively in the project work rather than in my normal tightly detailed style.

I could simply create these paintings and store them in a box in my studio, but as a piece of my heart and soul go into every piece of art that I create, I would much rather they go to good homes where they will be enjoyed and appreciated!  Therefore I will offer them for sale to dog lovers and art collectors at affordable prices with a percentage of each sale being donated to a dog rescue group to help dogs in need.

I welcome submission of dog photos for reference, however the paintings in this project are not intended to be dog portrait commissions as such.  I personally (as an artist, mother and wife) need this project to be fun, enjoyable, stress and pressure free which means no time deadlines:)

I will set up an email newsletter to advise the next few dogs that I am planning to paint, so if you submit a photo of your dog, this will give you an indication of when your dogs’ painting will be ready to view - there is no obligation for you to purchase the finished painting so please don’t be afraid to send me your favourite photos!
